Transformer for measuring of power equipment: Maximum reliability in the testing of inverters for solar application

This transformer is equipped with a newly designed, GBE-owned pre-magnetization system. Unlike conventional pre-magnetizers, our compact and cost-effective system provides for the limitation of current in the supply phase through the use of a three-phase resistor and control with a PLC.

GBE S.p.A., in collaboration with a well-known Italian partner, participated in the design and construction of a highly advanced test room located in Northern Europe and used for the testing of power converters for solar application.

The project involves the supply of three transformers with absolutely unique features:

  • The first transformer with power 2000 kVA and voltage 20/0.69 kV is made of epoxy resin according to the customer specification and will be used to feed the entire test room.
  • The second transformer with significant power, 8660 kVA, is made with impregnated windings coated in class H paint instead, with power supply voltage ranging from 300 V to 1000 V and frequency from 45 to 65 Hz. This transformer feeds the converters directly during the operating test. Specifically, the transformer is complete with IP23 protection housing, forced ventilation system, and intermediate separator plate to ensure maximum optimisation and minimum footprint with up to 40% overload. During operation, the air is canalised into channels between the windings. Among the main features, this transformer is equipped with a newly designed, GBE-owned pre-magnetization system. Unlike conventional pre-magnetizers, our compact and cost-effective system provides for the limitation of current in the supply phase through the use of a three-phase resistor and control with a PLC.
  • The third transformer with power 300 kVA and impregnated with class H paint is instead used in the power supply of the test bench.

All the transformers have been manufactured according to ABB technical specifications and verified in our test room. In particular, the main transformer underwent a temperature-rise test with and without the use of forced ventilation.

This partnership is demonstration of the trust placed in the GBE product and further confirmation of our vast experience in the production of extremely special products.
