Rethinking Control Rooms – Local, Sustainable and Consistently Quality-Oriented
What does it mean to rethink control rooms locally, sustainably and at eye level? In this interview, Marc Jenni explains how he has been building up the JST branch in Switzerland since summer 2025 – with an understanding of critical infrastructures, people, processes and quality.
Marc Jenni on Quality Maxims, Local Proximity and the Future of Control Rooms in Switzerland
With the new Swiss branch, JST is taking the next strategic step in the DACH region. Switzerland is considered an economic area with high standards, critical infrastructures and a strong industry – ideal framework conditions and at the same time a perfect fit for holistic control room solutions with clear quality maxims. To develop this market, JST recruited Marc Jenni as Solution Consultant Switzerland in summer 2025. He brings not only many years of experience in sales, consulting and project management, but also a fine sense for his compatriots, for industry-specific processes and needs. He spoke with us about what distinguishes the Swiss location from other markets, why human factors are more than a "soft topic" for him – and how he wants to position JST in his home country.
Marc, before we talk about control rooms, strategies and markets: How would you describe yourself beyond your professional activity?
Marc Jenni: Away from the job, I am primarily a family man, a team player and – I'm happy to admit – a connoisseur. Good conversations and good chocolate are simply part of it for me.
My working style can be summarized in three words: structured, reliable, solution-oriented.
You began your professional career as a car mechanic, later studied and managed large projects in the energy sector. How did this path lead you to control rooms of all things?
Marc Jenni: There was actually a key moment: when I saw a professionally planned control room from the inside for the first time, it clicked. In such a room, everything that interests me – technology, processes and team dynamics – is condensed. And that's in an environment where every decision can count. The idea of supporting people where they have to remain calm and confident in decisive moments – that grabbed me immediately.
What motivates you to set up the Swiss branch for JST?
Marc Jenni: The combination of Swiss precision and JST know-how is enormously attractive to me. Switzerland is full of highly critical 24/7 infrastructures – energy, transport, IT, security, data centers. At the same time, JST brings three decades of experience in the design of modern control rooms. Bringing these two worlds together locally is a real opportunity for me to create value.
You know the Swiss market well. Are Swiss companies "waiting" for JST? Or do you first have to do some convincing?
Marc Jenni: I would say both. People in Switzerland don't know our setup well enough yet. The central task is therefore: brand awareness. But: whenever I say that we are setting up our own Swiss branch – and that we are not doing it "from southern Germany on the side" – I experience enthusiasm. In Switzerland, people appreciate reliability. And a local presence stands for exactly that.
Choosing a JST control room always means a decision for quality, durability and a holistic concept. How is this claim received in Switzerland?
Marc Jenni: That's just it! JST and my home country are made for each other! Swiss companies are willing to invest – if the quality is right, the system is expandable and the operating costs remain calculable. Short product cycles or a throwaway mentality are generally not well received. JST delivers high-quality, durable 24/7 technology at a fair price. It simply fits!
Why is now the right time for a JST branch in Switzerland?
Marc Jenni: This becomes clear when you look at the current situation: Switzerland combines several factors: a considerable density of critical infrastructures, very high quality standards, long investment cycles and increasing challenges due to digitalization, cyber risks and the energy transition. Being on site now means: being closer, reacting faster, providing better support.
If that is the status quo, what trends do you identify in the Swiss market?
Marc Jenni: Three dominant topics are relevant for us: First is cyber resilience. Control rooms are increasingly evolving into security centers. Then remote operation and site networking must be mentioned. And of course the flood of data – visualization and collaboration are becoming business-critical. JST has had strong solutions in all these areas for years: KVM, visualization, control room software.
You mentioned that target-group-oriented communication is a matter of course for you. How important is this skill in the Swiss market?
Marc Jenni: Extremely important! I want to be able to talk to everyone. With the operators, shift supervisors, IT or cleaning staff. That comes easily to me. I don't pretend to be someone else. And in Switzerland, there's something else: language and culture. Swiss customers appreciate it when I speak to them in Swiss German. That creates trust and shows appreciation.
Many market competitors rely on partner structures. JST offers everything from a single source. How does that affect things?
Marc Jenni: That is a clear advantage. At JST, there is a fixed contact person for furniture, KVM, video wall, software, ergonomics and processes. Other providers work with several partners. This creates frictional losses. We deliver a coordinated overall package.
You emphasize how important human factors are to you. What does "holistic" mean to you – beyond the technology?
Marc Jenni: Human factors are not a "soft topic" for me, but a safety and productivity factor. A workstation that offers clear lines of sight, a video wall that is sensibly designed, good acoustics and lighting conditions – all of this determines whether an operator makes the right decisions in the event of a malfunction. We always start with the people: Who works where, when and how? Ergonomics, processes and technology form an ecosystem – not individual components.
Which industries are particularly exciting for you in Switzerland?
Marc Jenni: In the short term, I see a strong demand in energy and critical infrastructures, as well as in the areas of IT and security. But transport and logistics as well as highly industrialized production companies also play a decisive role. Many people underestimate how industrialized Switzerland is. From chemicals to food to precision technology – a lot is happening here.
This list certainly makes one think of growth. But isn't it rather the case that we are living in difficult economic times? The expansion step actually seems courageous. Or is the control room industry more resilient than others?
Marc Jenni: A clear answer? Yes! Control rooms are the nervous system of many areas – energy, transport, industry, data centers, security. These sectors continue to run even if markets weaken. Investments then tend to shift from "nice to have" to business-critical infrastructure.
That fits with your statement that you analyzed the market meticulously – even before signing the contract with JST. What did you find out?
Marc Jenni: I wanted to know what I was getting into. Switzerland demands precision, quality and reliability. I took a close look at industries, segments, potential partners and multipliers. My conclusion: the opportunities are great. But you have to proceed systematically, in a networked manner and creatively.
Speaking of creative: You want to work with Virtual Reality in the future. Why? What kind of virtual experience are we talking about?
Marc Jenni: Anyone who visits the JST control room simulator in Hamburg will discover a new world. There you can experience firsthand what is possible today. But the trip to northern Germany is of course time-consuming. I am looking for ways to inspire customers. Something that stays in the memory. The control room simulator as a VR experience would be a huge lead magnet. "Do you want to experience a control room virtually? Then get in touch." That is more effective than any PowerPoint.
What improves specifically for Swiss customers from day 1?
Marc Jenni: They have a contact right on their doorstep. Someone who communicates at eye level, can be on site quickly and knows the local needs and mentalities. I am able to support workshops, inspections and coordination without long travel times. The motto is: From local for local!
What is your vision for JST in Switzerland in three years?
Marc Jenni: I want JST to be considered the first choice for sophisticated control rooms in Switzerland.
With strong references, a small, powerful team and maybe even our own demo center. When someone says: "We are planning a new control room", the same sentence should include:
"We are talking to JST."
Finally: What is your personal drive? How do you want to convince your new customers?
Marc Jenni: I strive for a mixture of perfection in everyday life and innovation in the background.
Solutions must work in shift service – not just in the showroom. And quite honestly: I want to support customers long-term. Honesty and transparency are crucial for me. Better a clear no than a false yes. That's exactly why I'm convinced: "JST and Switzerland – it's a perfect fit."
