Using Flexibility in the Power Grid: From Measurement Data to Control

Flexibility already exists within the energy system. The key is making it visible, assessable and controllable in daily operation, both before and behind the meter.

Flexibility in the power grid is no longer just a buzzword. For grid operators, utilities and system operators, the question today is more practical: how can existing potential be identified, assessed and used in a targeted way during operation?

The answer does not start with a single component, but with the data chain. Measurement values from the grid, systems and consumers must be recorded, transmitted, visualized and integrated into control processes. Only then can flexibility contribute to stability, efficiency and planning reliability.

In practice, this involves two levels:

Before the meter, the focus is on greater transparency in the distribution grid. Digital local substations and solutions such as WAGO Application Grid Gateway help record measurement data in the substation, transmit it and make it usable for grid operation. This makes it easier to assess grid conditions, detect changes more quickly and use operational data in a more targeted way.

Behind the meter, flexibility is created in buildings, sites, charging infrastructures and energy systems. Intelligent load management can help make better use of existing connected loads, reduce load peaks and integrate renewable generation, storage systems or additional consumers.

What matters is the consistent connection between the individual steps:

Measure. Connect. Visualize. Control.

This turns existing data into a reliable basis for operational decisions, scalable energy applications and more stable use of infrastructure. The added value does not come from additional measurement points alone, but from the ability to place data into a controllable context.

At Powertage 2026, WAGO will show how flexibility in the grid and in systems can be made usable in practice. Discuss with our experts which approaches are relevant for your infrastructure, your energy projects or your next expansion steps.
