Zmutt & Zmutt-Stafel - Projects high in the Swiss mountains

Two projects from our two companies PFIFFNER Instrument Transformers and ALPHA Elektrotechnik were delivered to the Zmutttal, in the mountains of Valais. These upgrades ensure the continued reliability and efficiency of the substations.

Our customer, HYDRO Exploitation SA, operates more than 40 hydropower plants. Some of these are the high-voltage substations between Zmutt and Stafel in the middle of the Swiss Alps, which are part of the Grande Dixence complex. Zmutt is a hamlet in the municipality of Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It lies at an altitude of 1936 m above sea level in the Zmutt valley to the west of Zermatt and consists of around 20 wooden houses built in the typical Valais style. The valley runs below the north face of the Matterhorn and begins at the Zmutt Glacier on the border with the Aosta Valley in Italy. As beautiful as the view is, special conditions come with each mountain station.

In 2019, ALPHA Elektrotechnik concluded a framework agreement with HYDRO Exploitation SA to renovate the Zmutt and Stafel high-voltage substations. At the end of last year, ALPHA-ET successfully completed the final delivery as part of this project.

Not just ALPHA-ET, but also PFIFFNER Instrument Transformers supplied products for our client HYDRO Exploitation SA. Ten combined instrument transformers were supplied to replace those from 1962 and 1964.

These upgrades ensure the continued reliability and efficiency of the substations. We would like to thank all those involved for their excellent cooperation.
